Chapter 7

THE FIRST TRACK MEET

The next morning, Addison woke up early and stumbled into the kitchen. It was empty.

Where is everyone? she thought. Usually Charlie got up early on Saturday and camped out in front of the TV. Sometimes Mom even made pancakes with blueberries.

Addison poured herself some cereal and ate breakfast alone. Her stomach hurt, and she wasn’t sure exactly why.

Was it because she’d eaten so much ice cream? Was it because she was nervous about the track meet today? Or was it because she was getting tired of sneaking around?

Addison sighed. She had another decision to make, and she had to make it fast. She could sneak out and write her mom a note, saying she was at Sofia’s. Or she could be honest. She could tell her mom everything and hope she could still go to the meet.

Once Addison was done eating, she was still the only one awake. She decided to see where her family was. She went to Charlie’s room and slowly opened the door.

Charlie was huddled under his blankets—and their mom was asleep on the floor. A bucket sat beside Charlie’s bed. The room smelled like vomit.

Oh no! Addison thought. Charlie must’ve gotten sick during the night. And it’s my fault for letting him eat all of that ice cream.

Addison looked at her mom. The dark circles under her eyes seemed even worse than usual. That decided it. She couldn’t wake up Mom, who had clearly had a rough night. One more little lie wouldn’t hurt.

I’ll come clean about everything after the track meet, Addison silently promised as she went back to her room.

After throwing on her track uniform and running shoes, Addison stopped in the kitchen to write a note.

Hi, Mom! I’m going over to Sofia’s house to work on a history project. I’ll be back later this afternoon. Love, Addison.

There. That should do it. Her mom trusted Sofia and wouldn’t question a thing.

Addison raced out the door and down the street to school. She just barely made the activity bus, but she had made it. She was on her way to her first-ever track and field meet.
